The ship sailed under Bolivian flag. At first sight, the ship was carrying a cargo of fruit and vegetables from Columbia. However, once customs entered the ship with the anti-drugs dogs, the animals immediately sounded the alarm at sacks with vegetables. The custom officials searched the objects that had caused the anti-drug dogs to sound the alarm and in that manner discovered a quantity of cocaine. The drugs had been hidden in a bag with ice and fruit remains, which were to be used for making fruit juice. The Coastguard had taken over the investigation from customs. They had let the Mar Caribe sail to Savaneta first where it cast anchor. The boat had then been searched a second time. During this search, they had discovered that no less than 50 kilos of cocaine had been hidden on board the boat. The discovery of the drugs had led to the apprehension of the three persons, namely the captain of the ship, the owner of the cargo, and the person who had come to collect the cargo on Aruba.
