Dominica seeks support from Insel Air

WILLEMSTAD — The government of Dominica wants technical support from the Curaçao airline company Insel Air for the establishment of an own national airline company. After having quietly scrutinized the performance of several regional airline companies, Premier Roosevelt Skerrit and his ministers had chosen Insel Air due to the growth, trustworthiness and service provision of this company.

"Dominica is yet another Caribbean nation, which realizes that one cannot implicitly depend on aerial transport through foreign companies with regard to the tourism industry. They had taken some nasty blows each time these companies had prevailed their commercial interests over the need for flights, which Dominica per definition has as an island", director of General and International Affairs, Edward Heerenveen of Insel Air explains on being asked.
The cabinet of Skerrit had contacted the management of Insel Air, through management-chairman Yvor Nassief of Invest Dominica Authority (IDA) – the institute that coordinates investments in and of that island, and invited them for a conversation on Dominica. After a member of the management had visited the island and understood the plans and wishes of the Dominicans, he had informed the entire management. Insel Air – which had also been approached by other regional countries and airline companies with requests on cooperation and exchange of knowledge – decided to accept the request. A delegation from Dominica had arrived on Curaçao this past weekend to discuss the frameworks and agreements for this cooperation with the executives of the Curaçao airline company. Minister Ian Douglas (Tourism, Legal Affairs and Aviation) had led the delegation consisting of Minister Charles Savarin (Utility companies, Energy and Harbors), director Rhoda Letang of IDA, and Nassief.
"It had been agreed upon that they would chart certain basic figures and existing regulations for us so that we could determine whether this support is viable for the establishment of a national airline company for Dominica", Heerenveen stated, explaining the objective of the most recent conversation between the two parties. "We certainly expect to be able to advise them on matters such as how to establish the company, which aircrafts are most suitable for their circumstances, etcetera. Further agreements will be made during the next discussion."
Expansion
Dominica had also expressed their wish that Insel Air would include the island in its flying route. The Curaçao airline company, which had indicated earlier this year to concentrate on consolidation and product improvement of the network for the time being and the current service provision – and therefore temporarily not establishing any priority on further network expansion – has nevertheless promised to study the inclusion of Dominica in their flying route.
Dominica is not the only country that had approached Insel Air directly for the inclusion in their flying route. Heerenveen is in Miami today to finalize the preparations for the flights to Haiti. The government of that country had approached the Curaçao airline company some months ago with the request – as previously with the ALM – to become the actual national carrier of that country. Insel Air had responded positively to this request. This company will fly its first flight between Miami and Port-au-Prince within short.
