In order to ascertain the status of tourism as viewed by the citizen and/or those involved with the sector, the tourism bureau CTB had organized a workshop yesterday. The organization wants to incorporate the results of the workshop in a forthcoming master plan for durable tourism development. That’s why marketing, aviation, environment, cruise tourism, personnel and financing were important topics.

Halcrow, the organization that will be drawing up the master plan, started the morning with a presentation of the island’s tourist developments to-date. The organization is convinced that tourism is the most important economical pillar on the island. This is based on the number of tourists, which had visited the island during the past years, and the number of hotel rooms and other accommodations available on the island. There was also a summary of the number of hotels under construction. Tourism is an important source of income and employment. The consistent growth of accommodations also implies that the number of visitors will have to increase in order to maintain a favorable occupational degree.

The participants of the workshop were divided into groups according to subject: marketing and aviation, environment, product development and cruise tourism, personnel and community, financing and tourism development. The attendants were given the opportunity to submit their input. Ultimately, the most important points from each group session were brought up during a dialogue.
A draft master plan will be drawn up during the course of next month. This will be followed by a course up to and including December of oriented approach by the public and all those involved, which outcome should lead to the final master plan. The latter will then be presented to the government for approval.
