GEBE Introduces Megawatty and Splash

The winning names of the GEBE Electricity and Water mascots were announced yesterday by managing director, William Brooks. Megawatty is the new electricity mascot depicted as an energy-saving light bulb and Splash is the new water mascot depicted as a faucet.

Winner Joep Jeroen Vroegop of the St. Magda Primary School was presented a prize consisting of a $200 gift certificate at Klass Electronics for his winning entry by GEBE managing director, William Brooks. Joep Jeroen’s family was also in attendance at the prize giving ceremony that was held at the Sister Magda School on Thursday, October 2, 3008.

Brooks commended Joep Jeroen on his imagination in coming up with the names for the mascots. "We received a large number of entries for the mascot competition and we were amazed at the number of really good names that were submitted." An internal poll of GEBE employees finally determined the winner. "Megawatty and Splash really represent what GEBE is about," Brooks continued, "Joep Jeroen will go down in GEBE history with his achievement."

In his essay, Joep Jeroen wrote that he chose the names because "when I say super splash, I think about an invisible superhero who is a superfast hero who comes to you when you need help. He would give you some helpful tips to save water. I chose Megawatty because when I think about Megawatty, I think about a kind of brother for Splash but he is from electricity and Splash from water. When you need help he comes like a flash to you. He tells you how to save some green."

The student of the Sister Magda School also won a laptop computer for his school that was donated by Klass Electronics. The vice principal, teacher Adelicia, expressed the school’s thanks for the donation and they will be using it with their active parenting presentations and sessions that will be coming up in the fall.

The mascot competition was held during the months of June and July on the islands of St. Maarten, Saba and Statia for primary school children. The winning names were chosen by a poll of GEBE employees. GEBE ‘s mascots promote the conservation of energy and water under the slogan of "Save Some Green" to help GEBE customers save money on their utility bills but also to help protect the environment on St. Maarten.
